A place
where people can do physics and math by their hands and minds
where legends come true
and chivalry is not forgotten.
Have you - let's say:
We do all this at the camps. Of course, not everything in a single year, the stay lasts only a fortnight…
The Summer Maths and Physics Camp is organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University in Prague. It helps to promote studies at the faculty and math and physics alone mainly among high school students.
Apart from the above-mentioned activities some “more classic” lectures take place. Students can learn lots of interesting facts from lectors - experts from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and the Czech Science Society.
The whole programme is divided into two basic parts: scientific and so-called leisure programme. The scientific part usually takes up the morning and early afternoon. It includes a coherent course of math and a course of physics, each of them in three variations different in sophistication as well as their aims. Relatively small groups allow the problem to be discussed thoroughly and the course leader can treat each student individually.
The focus of the scientific programme lies in projects. Groups of two or three students choose one project from the offer - typically making a device or a measuring instrument or looking into a certain phenomenon. Each project has its consultant - the organizer who has thought the project over and prepared it in advance. His task is only to help and possibly guide the students.
At the end of the camp students defend their project in front of a “comittee” - the consultants and the rest of the students - during “Closing conference”. The projects are intended to be a miniature scientific work.
Second part of the camp is the leisure programme. An interesting long-run game is prepared for each year. It connects separate afternoon games into an attractive tale that holds students' attention until the grand finale at the end. This programme helps us quickly create friendly atmosphere and maintain it for the whole two weeks.
The leisure programme is inspired by experiential and adventure learning. The games intend to stretch body and amuse mind but they also help students to develop their cooperative, communicational skills, self-image etc. By the elaboration of games and other activities this camp exceeds the usual summer camps.
Such a camp we aim to hold each year.
You can find some information about the camp on the poster prepared for Science on Stage Fair in CERN, Geneva 2005.
There are many young people who are interested in maths and physics and want to spend their holiday actively.
